Deaf education is a broad and diverse professional field that centers on the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Today, even children with profound hearing loss can learn to listen and talk by oral deaf education. Oral deaf education puts families first and prepares children for success in the mainstream at an early age.

By combining today’s sophisticated hearing technologies with intensive early intervention, oral deaf education builds a child’s confidence and life skills by teaching children to listen and talk. There are many institutes going for the deaf education. One of the institutes is at the Moog Center for Deaf Education we teach deaf children to talk. And we teach others to do it, too. We are located in St. Louis, Missouri and our Center consists of an Oral School for children ages 3 to 9, a Family School for children birth to 3 years and their families, and Professional Education and Outreach Programs through which we share our successful techniques with other professionals. Its highly individualized instruction is tailored to each child's present level of success and learning style.

Prospects for small kids

Children are grouped according to their abilities in each subject area, including speech, language, auditory skills and academics. Our teachers know how to gear instruction to be at just the right level for maximum challenge and maximum success. This is not only highly motivating for our children but results in their having high self esteem. Their children learn how to talk and understand when others talk to them. They also learn the same subjects as hearing children in preschool and early elementary school. Our goal is for our children to enter the mainstream whenever they show the skills necessary for competing successfully with their hearing age mates. This may be anywhere from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Deaf education colleges

Teachers often concentrate their studies in early childhood education, elementary education, or a secondary content area. Teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing become experts in language acquisition and the unique learning and communication needs of their students. Sometimes individuals who major in Deaf Education serve in capacities other than teaching for there are other fields and areas of expertise that interconnect Deaf Education. For example, some university graduates who majored in Deaf education have become transition specialties who work with students who are transitioning from school to work. Others function as educational interpreters and academic tutors in inclusive settings. Some may work with families of newly diagnosed deaf or hard of hearing child. There are many other areas in which Deaf Educators expand their careers such as speech language pathology, career technology, audio logy, school counseling, social work, educational administration, etc. Deaf Education provides a great foundation and career options for individuals who are interested in working with this unique population of students.

Deaf education programs

Deaf education programs provides for students to interact with deaf students at the college and to become involved in the social and cultural activities of the deaf community. Opportunities are plentiful for American Sign Language and Deaf Studies students to take part in seminars, workshops, or other activities related to the deaf community. The program emphasizes the use of American Sign Language skills and students have many opportunities to apply their skills. The program receives strong support from national, state, local agencies, and associations that support programs for and of the deaf.

Conclusion

Deaf education in this country has enabled us in the deaf community to take our fair role as important contributors to U.S. society. It is now time we help those in less developed countries to reach their full potential. The deaf education program is designed to provide students with the coursework and field experiences necessary to be licensed as an Intervention Specialist in the area of Deaf Education. The Deaf Education Intervention Specialist license is valid for teaching learners from ages 3 through 21, and grades pre-kindergarten through 12, who have been recognized with a hearing impairment.
