The word "vitamin" is comprised of two words ‘vital’ and "amines" because it was thought earlier those vitamins are actually amines. But this cannot be confirmed, as vitamins are believed to be having many structures.

They are principally organic compounds that are necessary for the body in very small amounts for the normal growth and maintenance of good health. All the vitamins have important roles to play for the human body.

Vitamins for grey hair:

There are different types of hair problems that range from loss of hair, split ends, dandruff, slow growth rate and of course grey hair. The problem of grey hair becomes even more serious when it occurs in young children of twelve or thirteen years of age. Graying of hair beyond a certain age is normal but it occurs at a young age due to lack of certain nutrients in the diet.

Each hair on our heads is made up of two parts:

a shaft - the colored part we see growing out of our heads
a root - the bottom part, which keeps the hair anchored under the scalp
The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by a tube of tissue under the skin that is called the hair follicle. Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, red, and anything in between.

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color - like gray, silver, or white - as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray.

The vitamin that helps prevent the graying of hair is Vitamin B-5, also known as pantothenic acid. The vitamin prevents premature gray hair along with raising one’s spirits. The vitamin is also referred to as “the happiness vitamin.”  The same is the case with the Para-amino benzoic acid and inositol which are generally included in hair supplements.
Apart from this, a bee product generally known as “royal jelly” has been in news for being in connection with the mind and hair. Royal jelly is in fact a rich source of pantothenic acid and is supposed to be a source of numerous undiscovered nutrients for hair. Due to its attractive properties, the royal jelly has become quite popular with movie stars, the royalty and athletes. Along with that, these days hair care products containing Emu oil which penetrates deep into the hair follicle and delivers nutrition.

Gray hair and children and vitamins:

Gray hair during childhood is known as ‘Premature graying’ also known as “canities”. The problem is usually due to genetic reasons. At time, some grey hair develops in children who are just eight years old. Occasionally also, a systemic disease can affect hair color. As far as graying of hair caused due to drugs and herbs are concerned, the list includes vitamin E supplements and Echinacea among others. In addition, smoking has also been linked to early graying.
